토토 배트맨 기획전 《토토 배트맨 A Glimpse of Our Time》은 우리 사회에 나타나는 현대 문명의 징후에 주목하여 시각예술을 통해 동시대 감각과 정서를 탐구하려는 시도로서 마련되었다. 기술의 발전이 고도화되면서 현대 도시의 생활은 나날이 편리해지고 우리에게 물질적 풍요로움을 선사한다. 특히 근래 사회의 많은 영역이 급격하게 디지털화됨에 따라 우리가 삶을 영위하는 방식도 크게 변하였다. 조사에 따르면 모바일 기기의 사용 시간과 모바일을 통한 소비 지출은 매년 늘어나고 있으며, 플랫폼 경제가 점차 확대되어 쇼핑, 영상시청 등 우리 생활 전반에 깊숙이 스며듦에 따라 현재 우리는 삶의 많은 부분을 비대면 시스템에 의지하게 되었다. 가상공간에서 서로 다른 개인들을 연결해주는 소셜 미디어는 시간과 공간에 구애받지 않고 소통하고 정보공유를 할 수 있도록 하며 개인이 역량을 펼칠 수 있는 새로운 기회를 주기도 한다. 이와 같이 비대면 문화의 확산은 사회 연결망을 확대하고 빠른 정보의 공유를 가능하게 하는 한편, 직접적인 상호작용의 기회를 차단하여 심화된 개인주의를 촉발한다. 초연결시대는 우리에게 일상생활 속에서 문명의 혜택을 경험하게 하지만 고립으로 오는 단절감, 만성적인 외로움, 심리적 불안 등 사회 구조뿐만 아니라 우리의 인식과 감정의 변화를 초래한다. 전시는 이러한 역동적인 흐름 속 현대 문명이 사회 전반에 미친 영향과 더불어 그 안에서 살아가는 개인 존재의 영역에 함께 주목하여 동시대 정서를 다각도로 살펴보고자 한다. 전시에 참여하는 박혜수, 송승은, 양승원, 유용선, 이지연, 정고요나, 정아람, 함미나 등 국내 작가 8인은 이처럼 급변하는 세상 속에서 주변을 첨예하게 관찰하고 대도시 속 개인과 공동체 삶의 속성에 대해 고찰하여 각자의 고유한 시각적 언어로 제시한다. 항상 분주하게 움직이고 쉼 없이 흘러가는 도시의 과열된 삶 속에서 긴장감을 늦출 수 없는 오늘날, 이번 전시가 지금의 모습을 반추하며 다양한 관점에서 현 시대를 바라보고 사유할 수 있는 장이 되기를 기대한다.

The Kumho Museum of Art's special exhibition A Glimpse of Our Time explores contemporary senses and sentiments through visual art, paying attention

to the manifestation of modern civilization in our society. In company with the advancement of technology, life in modern cities becomes more convenient

day by day and gives us material abundance. In particular, as many areas of society have been rapidly digitized in recent years, the way we lead our lives has

also changed significantly, and as online platforms have become a major venue for activities, the speed of information distribution has accelerated. This

changing environment has a great impact on society as a whole and penetrates not only the social structure but also our perceptions and behaviors.

Eight participating artists, Hyesoo Park, Seungeun Song, Seungwon Yang, Yongsun Yoo, Jiyen Lee, Goyona Jung, Ahram Jeong, and Mina Ham, acutely

observe the surroundings in a rapidly changing world like this, consider the characteristics of individual and community life in a metropolis, and present

them in their own visual language. We hope that this exhibition will serve as a field for looking at and thinking about the current era from various perspectives while ruminating on the present state.​
